In order to stimulate milk production, cows are forcefully made pregnant through artificial insemination.

Bull calves are typically killed within 48 hours of being born. This is because they are generally the wrong type of cow to raise for beef, and they are little value to dairy farmers alive.

Even though they could live for up to 15 to 20 years if given the chance, most dairy cows are killed before the age of 7.  This is because after 3 or 4 lactations, the amount of milk a dairy cow produces begins to fall.  At this point, it makes sense for a farmer to replace her with a younger cow.
